What Are Custom Oral Appliances?
- Custom oral appliances are dental devices that are specifically designed and fitted by a dentist or orthodontist to address sleep apnea. They work by repositioning the jaw, tongue, and soft tissues in the throat to maintain an open airway during sleep. Types of Custom Oral Appliances
- Mandibular Advancement Devices (MADs):
- These are the most common type of oral appliance for sleep apnea.
- They work by advancing the lower jaw (mandible) forward, which helps to keep the airway open.
- MADs are adjustable, allowing for fine-tuning of the jaw position for optimal comfort and effectiveness.
Tongue Retaining Devices (TRDs)
- These appliances hold the tongue in a forward position to prevent it from collapsing backward and obstructing the airway.
- TRDs are less commonly used than MADs but can be effective for certain patients.
How Sleep Apnea Affects Your Oral Health?
- Cause: Many individuals with sleep apnea breathe through their mouths during sleep due to airway obstruction.
- Effect: Mouth breathing can lead to dry mouth (xerostomia), which reduces saliva production. Saliva is essential for neutralizing acids, washing away food particles, and preventing tooth decay and gum disease.
- Cause: Dry mouth and reduced saliva can increase the risk of gum disease (periodontal disease).
- Effect: Gum disease can lead to inflammation, infection, and tooth loss if not properly managed. The bacteria associated with gum disease can also exacerbate systemic health issues.
