Consultation with sleep specialists

Initial Assessment
- Medical History: The specialist will take a detailed medical history, including any existing health conditions, medications, and family history of sleep disorders.
- Sleep History: You may be asked to provide information about your sleep patterns, including how long it takes to fall asleep, how often you wake up during the night, and any symptoms you experience (e.g., snoring, gasping for air, excessive daytime sleepiness).

Symptom Evaluation
- Questionnaires: You may be asked to complete questionnaires or sleep diaries to assess your sleep quality and identify specific symptoms.
- Physical Examination: A physical exam may be conducted to check for any anatomical issues that could contribute to sleep problems, such as enlarged tonsils or nasal obstructions.
- Sleep Study (Polysomnography): If sleep apnea or another sleep disorder is suspected, the specialist may recommend a sleep study. This can be done in a sleep lab or at home using portable monitoring equipment. The study records various physiological parameters during sleep, including brain activity, heart rate, breathing patterns, and oxygen levels.
- Home Sleep Apnea Testing: For some patients, a home sleep apnea test may be sufficient. This involves using a simplified device to monitor breathing and oxygen levels while you sleep at home.
How Sleep Apnea Affects Your Oral Health?
- Cause: Many individuals with sleep apnea breathe through their mouths during sleep due to airway obstruction.
- Effect: Mouth breathing can lead to dry mouth (xerostomia), which reduces saliva production. Saliva is essential for neutralizing acids, washing away food particles, and preventing tooth decay and gum disease.
- Cause: Dry mouth and reduced saliva can increase the risk of gum disease (periodontal disease).
- Effect: Gum disease can lead to inflammation, infection, and tooth loss if not properly managed. The bacteria associated with gum disease can also exacerbate systemic health issues.
